She was a beautiful child, is a beautiful actress - 23 when this was written, and had so much naturally going for her. So this Oprah podcast really surprised zandtao. It amazes zandtao how time stands still - or sometimes moves back on the race issue. The immediate reaction is hard to understand, how as an individual bill can start as a racist from middle-class upbringing, and begin to remove some of the conditioning; yet new generations are in some ways back where society was when he started. Amandla still feels the beauty of black women is not recognised, that the conditioning asks beautiful black women to adopt "white", talks of the hair issues bill heard during YJ, and is trying to promote the art and creativity of black people that was the core of bill's thinking for Young Journal. She spoke of supporting the Art Hoe Collective discussed here.
But here is zandtao's reason for including her talk in this appendix. In the second part of her talk zandtao was knocked back, basically Amandla was promoting authenticity as an act of love and revolution - the essential truth of this book. Knocked back and humbled - Amandla is 23, a time when bill was all over the place with upheaval. Amazing.
