AWAKENING COMMUNITY

EMBODIMENT - from SANGHA to COMMUNITY-BUILDING

Addon 2F - Causality, conditioning and conformity

Sangha, as part of the awakening process it is likely that you have considered conditioning and conformity in some form. Out of Toltec wisdom comes the 4 agreements:-

In his books on the 4 agreements and the 5th agreement:-
Be sceptical, but learn to listen.

Don Miguel Ruiz recognises a process for young people growing up through accepting agreement as a way of fitting into society. As we start to accept, then we use these 4 agreements as a way of discernment especially adding the 5th so that we can develop a wise way of living in society.

This is a positive way of seeing how we grow up and that agreements we make are beneficial to ourselves and adults in society. zandtao does not see agreements we make in such a positive way, and describes the way he grew up as an upbringing of conditioning and conformity. What Don Miguel describes as agreement zandtao sees as volitional or unconscious conditioning and conformity, the process is the same the tone is more negative. Let's be clear it is not all negative but it is also not all positive - pleasant agreement. Nor is conditioning and conformity all negative.

We learn through love, and perhaps the most significant of that learning is early years - this is why the karmic choice of parents is so important (see Sacred Wound and ego-evolve-consciousness discussed in zeer-consciousness ). We love our parents and that love conditions and conforms us into acceptance; we give our attention to parents and what they want, giving us agreements or fragmentation depending on those desires. Parents are subject to an upbringing that has given them a conditioning and conformity, and this is passed on; that's just the way upbringing is. Unless part of that upbringing is so unbearable that a child fragments burying what is too difficult to agree with, yet fragmentation has its own need to be integrated leading to adult issues. This is a causality based on upbringing.

As part of our awakening process we recognise how upbringing affects us, and we can react against it often emotionally. What gets passed on as young learning can be unlearned by releasing attachment, and there is a causality to that release. We need to see how attachments are formed, and for zandtao that was best explained by the Buddhist law of dependent origination - paticcasamuppada:-

This is the Buddhist meaning of conditioning (Ajaan Buddhadasa's translation of the Pali), and such causes and conditions are just a process - a process that happens from ignorance to suffering. Over the years zandtao has grappled with this law but has done little more than scratch the surface. But it has helped with releasing attachments or releasing restrictions. Out of this has grown a feeling of causality, conditioning and conformity that he sees throughout society, some intentional and some not, some conditioning volitional and some unconscious. But what there is for zandtao is a totality of ongoing causality (causality based on conditioning and conformity) that if he were able could trace all intention, causes and actions. Causality could conceivably explain all that happens but given the pervasive nature of causality, conditioning and conformity it is difficult to identify specifics.

bill considered Ajaan Buddhadasa as his main Buddhist teacher, and in speaking of paticcasamuppada Buddhadasa also combined it with idappaccayata as nature :-

sometimes calling idappaccayata-paticcasamuppada the Buddhist God. This bill liked but again he only scratched the surface, however he likes the combination of Nature and causality. Given that zandtao sees the path arising from Nature (idappaccayata) then with paticcasamuppada there is a causality that would bring sila and order to life on Gaia.

So this is where zandtao's causality came from; he does not have sufficient understanding to claim that what he is describing as causality is what was intended by the law of dependent origination not could he describe it as Buddhadasa's God - idappaccayata-paticcasamuppada. However he is able to contend that causality exists in daily life and the way of change is intentionality.
